DIGITAL LEATHER, Sorcerer (Goner)

Aug 26, 2008 6:51 PM

A magical clatter of gorgeous noise
Things are always on the verge of crashing and burning for Shawn Foree's alter ego/band. The Jay Reatard mastered disc is a potent mix of overdriven guitars, disturbed keys and fuzzy vocals. The A-side is a mostly solo bedroom effort, and the more straightforward B-side is recorded live with a band. First-half highlights "Modulated/Simulated" and "Styrofoam" talk about love, with the former focusing on its power to make reality painless, while the later swoons and careens on its synth lead as Foree compares his love affair to styrofoam's knack for keeping things hot or cold to fit a need. Side B amps up the energy with cuts like "Pleasurebot" and "She Had a Cameltoe" neatly summed up by their titles. Differing personnel and recording environments don't keep this noisy romp from being a cohesive session of sonic witchcraft.—Noah Levine [4 out of 5 stars]
