CD Review: Detroit Grand Pubahs, Nuttin' Butt Funk (Det.Ele.Funk)

Risky techno business
DGP's scattergun bangs out mind-melting techno gallops and completely unrelated hedonism. Amid deep, dirty slingshots and seedy CCTV beats, the Pubahs sleaze, risk and randomize their way from electro transmission "Earth Hoes" to pimp-funk and nasty self-amusement. Additional one-offs of rock-rap protest and shiny silver synth surfs make it easy to lay personality disorders on Mack Goudy Jr. and The Mysterious Mr. O. The upshot is that the Motor City band's "Message From Overkill," "ChiTown Shuffle" and "Crystal" are extra thrilling.—Matt Oliver [4 out of 5 stars]
