CD Review: Brooklyn Academy, Bored of Education (Gold Dust Media)

Brooklyn preservation
With their collective debut, indie hip-hop vets Brooklyn Academy prove that not everything in their borough has become glossy. These MCs—Pumpkinhead, Mr. Metaphor and Block McCloud—keep things grimy with the aid of beatsmiths like Black Milk and Marco Polo. The dramatic boom-bap of "Raise Ya Hands" sees the trio at their best, dropping pointed battle-ready raps over orchestral samples. And many of the tracks maintain that same traditional potency. While this LP isn't without some forgettable points, such as the drab sex song "Weight Liftin," it's an overall worthy effort.—Max Herman [3.5 out of 5 stars]
