SUBTONIC PROJECTOR BENEFIT, FEB. 20, NYC

Feb 18, 2004 12:00 PM, The Editors

Almost every week for several years, Giles Hendrix and Chris Jordan have been doing amazing live video at the Bunker/Polar Bear Club. If you've ever been to the Bunker, you have experienced their particular brand of visual magic. SubTonic is one of the only hubs of live video art in NYC without its own video projector. This means that Giles and Chris have to bring their own projector every week. A video projector is a very expensive, sensitive piece of equipment—not the kind of thing you want to be carrying around the city streets in a backpack late at night. It should also be noted that Jordan has had two projectors stolen in the past few months.

The main purpose of this benefit is to raise money for a projector for subTonic (Tonic and all participating artists have graciously agreed to donate all proceeds to our cause), so we can more easily accommodate the live video artists who have been so good to us. Any additional money made will go toward a new subwoofer.

Phonomena (the weekly Thursday party at subTonic, which has been happening for 4-plus years and has evolved from a downtempo/experimental DJ party into one of the centers of weird improv in NYC) has put together an amazing lineup for the upstairs. Do we really need to tell you why Christian Marclay, John Zorn, DJ Olive, Badawi, Tim Barnes, etc, make an incredible lineup for a measly $10? We didn't think so.

The Bunker will be creating a completely different vibe downstairs. David Last is the newest artist on the Agriculture. His debut EP of refried dubby dancehall comes out in March. qpe, also of the Agriculture, will be playing an early set of moody instrumental downtempo beatz. The icing on the cake is $mall Change, the master of eclectic DJing, who always gets the kids dancing to the weirdest records imaginable.

As the focus of the night is on visuals, Chris and Giles have invited many guests to join them downstairs for some multiple projector madness. mpld is doing visuals upstairs, along with installations from multipolyomni and Aki Onda.

The party goes from 8 p.m. until 3 a.m. SubTonic is not free this week: $10 gets you into both floors all night long. If you are willing and able to donate more than $10 at the door, please do.
