MOVEMENT '04, DETROIT'S ELECTRONIC MUSIC FESTIVAL, MAY 29-31

May 26, 2004 12:00 PM, The Editors

If you're heading to Detroit's Hart Plaza this Memorial Day weekend for Movement, be sure to stop by the Remix booth for your chance to win a package including Stanton FinalScratch and select Native Instruments software!

Over the past four years, Detroit has been the host city of the most important electronic music events in the world: a free three-day festival integrating musical and visual artistry, creativity, diversity and state-of-the-art technology.

In 2004, the Detroit Electronic Music Festival celebrates its 5th Anniversary as once again, over 70 world-renowned acts converge at the epicenter of techno to perform on multiple stages this Memorial Day weekend. On each stage, the performances are strategically scheduled to create a continuous flow, beginning at noon and building musical momentum until the finale at midnight.

This year, the Movement Festival continues its dedication to disseminating some of the world's most important music and promoting cutting-edge talent while maintaining allegiance to the heritage of true urban music.

Full Range This year the Movement Festival features over 70 acts, from the United States and abroad. Performers cover almost the entire range of electronic sounds and genres. Some featured artists include: Amp Fiddler Live, Danny Krivit, Derek Plaslaiko, Duplex Live, Fat Freddy’s Drop, Francois K, Groove Junkies, Jaylib, Kai Alce, Kevin Saunderson, Kenny Larkin, Language, Marques Wyatt, Mike Grant, Osunlade Live, Stacey Pullen, Traxx and more. Full lineup and DJ set times can be viewed at www.movementfestival.com.

In addition to the usual four stages, the 2004 Festival features “Techno Boulevard,” a performance site where local, national and international labels and musicians will have the opportunity to interface with one another and their listening audience. The area is included in an effort to promote and nurture independent and emerging music.

Music For the Eyes Techno culture is known for the visual aesthetic as well as its innovative sound and this year, the Festival is poised to deliver a spectacle. An in-house creative team collaborated with Gyro Creative to produce a stunning visual brand; a limited number of posters bearing the new Movement look will be available for sale at the Festival.

Furthermore, in a collaboration between the Festival and Eclectic Detroit, an on-site light and sound installation will be exhibited on the Festival grounds. It will be located next to the river stairway, near the Pyramid Stage in Hart Plaza.

Beyond Detroit At Movement Festival 2004, the international influence of Detroit’s music will make its way back, with an international tribute to Detroit. This year’s Underground stage will be hosted by Movement’s European partner: The Generator. A broad range of different Detroit-influenced styles, performed and played by artists from Holland can be heard during the weekend. Besides the +31/313 union on this stage, cooperation on other stages will showcase artists such as Rednose Distrikt and DMC-champion Rockid.

The opening day of the Festival will see another cross-border collaboration: a discussion forum dedicated to the emergence and proliferation of electronic music, bringing together techno music pioneers such as Derrick May and Fab5Freddie, and conceptual artists F. Phil Barash and Manuel Garza. An ambitious proposal for the expansion of the Festival, called “Nodes and Circumstances” will be exhibited at the Gallery. The Gallery will also host guest performers for the day.

After- Party Action After hours, Downtown Detroit, will come alive as every bar, club, gallery and warehouse space overflows with 200 separate after parties and events hosted by the world’s top promoters, record labels and magazines.

The Festival will be throwing a few after-dark bashes of its own:
