ALL THE WAY LIVE

An audience of aspiring DJs and prospective students got a firsthand look at a live remix session at Remix Live, Volume 1, an event held in New York on Dec. 2, 2004, by the Institute of Audio Research, an audio school now in its fourth decade. Hot 97 FM radio, Tekserve and Remix co-sponsored the event, and IAR threw together an impressive roster of talent for the night, including drummer Gregg Gerson (David Bowie, Billy Idol), producer Chucky Thompson (Mariah Carey) and DJ Jazzy Joyce (Hot 97).
IAR instructor Steve Brown orchestrated the remix, which drew from seven hip-hop and vintage funk tracks as well as music from a live band. A giant screen next to the stage brought the audience into the thick of the action, displaying the remix in progress with a projected Digidesign Pro Tools session. “We show people how this stuff happens,” says Jody Dobson of IAR. In fact, the Institute shows people how this stuff happens year round at its campus in Greenwich Village, where IAR prepares students for careers in audio engineering and music production. After the event, audience members had a chance to mix it up personally with Jazzy Joyce and the other performers, climbing onstage to spin discs and ask questions.
