HOMETOWN LOVE FOR REMIX HOTEL

Jan 1, 2005 12:00 PM

We were just proud Remix parents to show off our increasingly fabulous Remix Hotel to our hometown crowd in San Francisco Oct. 27-29. And what a weekend it was! Housed inside the superswank W Hotel, the Remix Hotel San Francisco, presented by Technics, welcomed more than 3,000 aspiring producers, artists, MCs and fans to its three floors of production and performance madness. Setting up shop on the first two floors and showing their gear — not to mention holding master classes, hosting star-studded demos and providing real hands-on instruction — were the likes of Apple, Cakewalk, Digidesign, Mackie, Denon, M-Audio, Vestax, Rane, Steinberg, Blue Sky, Propellerhead, BIAS, Pioneer, Ableton, Rane, Serato, Focal, Guitar Center and many more.

But the farther upstairs you went through Remix Hotel's three floors, the louder the volume got. Under a big-top tent on the outdoor terrace, a slew of performances and Q&As played round-robin on the Native Instruments stage. Thursday, Oct. 27 kicked off with a performance by analog-synth provocateur Richard Devine. Following, the Sister SF DJ crew opened the weekend's question and answer sessions. Boom Bip, Deepsky, Photek, DJ Irene and George Centeno performed, and Domino of Hieroglyphics, Dan the Automator and J. Boogie went to bat for the Q&As.

On Friday, Photek, Sutekh, Telefon Tel Aviv, Matthew Dear and Snoop Dogg's DJ BattleCat hit the turntables, synths and laptops, and Paul van Dyk, Gabriel & Dresden, DJ Colette and mixing engineers Angela Piva and Roey Shamir stepped up to the mics. Dancing on the final day began early with a performance and Q&A by Sound Tribe Sector 9, which packed the terrace with fans. The evening continued with sets by Sharkey and DJ Gridlock, a Q&A with Blackalicious' Chief Xcel and a grand finale by Paul Oakenfold.

All three nights continued with afterparties with the likes of Photek, Deepsky and Telefon Tel Aviv. Stay tuned to www.remixhotel.com for Remix Hotel updates. Next stop, Miami!
