DOUBLE FANTASY HORSEPLAY

If you spent hours as a kid brushing the hair on your My Little Ponies and nowadays never miss your local Renaissance fair, then Cavalia: A Magical Encounter Between Horse and Man is your ultimate fantasy. But even if those things aren't your cup of tea, there's no denying the spectacle of 60-plus performers and 36 horses doing nonstop acrobatic feats backed by a 200-foot projection screen and a live band of keyboards, turntables, oboe, cello, drums, bass, guitar and angelic female vocals. Yet despite synths and scratching, the soundtrack — composed and produced by Michel Cusson — is more suitable for mom's dinner party than a dancefloor.
Stopping in Berkeley, Calif., for 13 performances under a big top Aug. 5 — Sept. 4, the event resembled a certain other French-Canadian circus — and for good reason: Cavalia's artistic director, Normand Latourelle, is responsible for bringing Cirque du Soleil to the U.S. The production has also run in Los Angeles; Seattle; San Francisco; and Del Mar, Calif.
