The Remix DJ Chicken Little Project

To promote the November release of the CGI Chicken Little movie, the fine folks at Disney invited select artists and companies to “paint/paste/sticker/mark-up/transform” blank Chicken Little vinyl toys.
Dubbed “Chickinterprentation” and organized by StreetVirus, the customized Chicken Littles were then collected and put on display at Meltdown in L.A. in May, followed by 360 Toy Group in New York in June. After the exhibit, all the pieces will be put up for auction with the proceeds going to various children’s charities.
Naturally, the Remix toy had to be a forward-thinking artist, so we enlisted our own Freefall Jones to go about transforming the blank vinyl figure into a tech-saavy musician worthy of being covered in our magazine.
Chicken Little arrived at the Remix offices courtesy of the people from StreetVirus. Look how cute he is!
Armed with only $60 in art supplies, Freefall Jones began the project by asking, “How am I going to do this with only $60 in art supplies?”
First point of business, DESTROY CHICKEN LITTLE! Actually, in order to lay down a good basecoat of paint, Jones had to take apart the toy. Luckily, vinyl is pliable, so using a hair dryer to heat up and soften the joints, he was able to easily pull apart and break down the figure into its component pieces.
Next, we had to make sure DJ Chicken Little had all the best equipment. After a quick consultation with Technology Editor Robert Hanson, it was decided that DJ CL would be equipped with a Pioneer CDJ-1000, a Virus Indigo keyboard, an Allen & Heath Xone mixer and an Apple PowerBook running Ableton Live. This was done by printing out images of the gear, carefully cutting them out and then pasting them to tiny painted blocks of wood.
After detailing the pieces of Chicken Little’s body, it was time to put him back together. Again, Freefall used a hair dryer to heat up and soften the pieces. At this point, DJ CL had a very “ducky-goth” style going for him.
And here’s our DJ Chicken Little and his DJ booth all put together! If you look closely, he has on a Remix T-shirt and is, of course, wearing his VIP Remix Hotel badge on a lanyard around his neck. Chicken Little then proceeded to abuse his VIP privileges by drinking all the champagne and hitting on all the young hens in the henhouse. What a rock star.
