DAYDREAM BELIEVER

Sep 1, 2004 12:00 PM

This year, Remix Hotel NYC featured Q&A sessions, alternately moderated by Remix Features Editor Kylee Swenson and SAE instructor Dustin Cook, with Ming+FS, Djinji Brown, producer D/R Period (MOP Cam'ron, AZ), Grandmixer DXT, Disco D, Dan the Automator, Mocean Worker, producer Troy Taylor (Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin, Ginuwine), Steve Pageot (Aretha Franklin, Krayzie Bone) and others. Meanwhile, other rooms featured demos and discussions with artists such as Junior Sanchez, Sharkey, and Chuck D and DJ Johnny Juice from Public Enemy (who talked heatedly for an hour in the Cakewalk room about bringing soul back to hip-hop).

Huge highlights were the Hank Shocklee Experience and Ladies on the Mic panels. Producer Hank Shocklee (Public Enemy, Madonna, Ice Cube, Janet Jackson, Peter Gabriel) brought a crew of cohorts to talk shop. Even though the room was already overflowing, it was all the more crowded with talent. Producer/musicians James Cruz (Juvenile, Phantom Planet), Kyle Jason (George Clinton, Bootsy Collins), Abnormal (Dr. Dre, Mary J. Blige), Lee Stone (Pharoahe Monch, Mos Def), DJ Static Rah (Digga), Phase 1 (Mental Notes), DJ Kiva (Brooklyn Massive) and D2 (Mental Notes) gave advice on everything from mixing to working with new artists.

The next day, Remix flipped the script with an all-women producers' panel featuring Nona Hendryx (member of the legendary LaBelle group with Patti LaBelle), Angela Piva (Mary J. Blige, Michael Jackson), Julie Perez (former music mixer for Late Night With Conan O'Brien), Jo-Ann Nina (A&R for Shocklee Entertainment and founder of Ladies on the Mic), Felicia Jefferson (Pink, LL Cool J), Tasneem Nanji (guitarist for Kelis), Stoni (NYC Beat Battle Champion) and DJ Shakey (Diesel, MTV).
