April 20-22: Green Apple Music Arts Festival Second-Annual Earth Day Event

Building on its inaugural success of 2006, the Green Apple Music Arts Festival is bringing the message of Earth Day to over 80 venues with 150 concerts in New York, Chicago and San Francisco. From April 20 to 22, venues from across the country will come together to cultivate awareness of environmental issues through the unifying voice of music.
The Festival will kick off on the east coast with two days of music, entertainment and environmental activities at Earth Fair outside Grand Central Terminal in New York City beginning the morning of Friday, April 20.
On Earth Day, Sunday, April 22, the Green Apple Music Arts Festival will host large-scale free, day-time events for all ages in the three participating cities' finest parks including Central Park, the Lincoln Park and Golden Gate Park.
In the evenings, three nights of genre-splicing performances will offer entertainment by some of the biggest names in music today. This collective effort will take part in theaters, night clubs and music halls of all sizes ranging from San Francisco's famed Fillmore Auditorium and Warfield to New York's historical Blue Note and Knitting Factory to underground hotspots like The Empty Bottle and Schubas in Chicago.
The festival also includes the Green Apple Kids Concerts, a series of children's and family shows held throughout the weekend in each city. These are designed to not only entertain, but to also encourage the next generation to be environmentally conscious and proactive.
This year's event follows the immensely successful First Annual Green Apple Festival, held in New York City and boasting such acts as Soulive, Antibalas, Scissor Sisters, Ghostface, Bela Fleck, The New York Philharmonic, Baaba Maal, Little Feat, Angelique Kidjo and many more. This year's lineup promises more artists, more diversity and more memorable performances.
The Green Apple Music Arts Festival will put its Earth Day message into practice by "greening" all of the participating venues. Working with Onyx Distribution, they will supply the Festival's establishments with recycled products and biodegradable cleaners to ensure the event is eco-friendly. The entire festival will be carbon-neutral, meaning it will offset any carbon dioxide emission produced as a result of the festival, making this the nation's largest carbon-neutral event ever.
"The core idea of the Green Apple Festival is to raise awareness of Earth Day," said Peter Shapiro, Founder and Executive Producer of the Festival. "By including a diverse roster of artists from the US and beyond, we hope to promote this very important day and, in turn, help to create a healthy, sustainable environment not just for our audiences here, but for people around the world. There should be a global Earth Day event every year."
