CD Review: Yoav, Charmed and Strange
Mar 18, 2008 8:24 PM Kristi Kates (Writer)
An anomaly among
guitarists, Yoav is one of the few you'll hear who truly pushes the guitar past
its own boundaries; it's strange, yes, in a good way, but also gorgeous to hear
and quite charmed indeed. The London-based musician draws unusual sounds from
his guitar—dark, sharp drumbeats, poignant violins and bell-like tones, all via
his own skill and by electronically looping the rhythms he plays on the guitar
body. And we haven't even mentioned his rich voice, which especially stands out
on tracks "Sometimes...," the supercatchy "Club Thing" and
his ghostly take on the Pixies' "Where Is My Mind."
