CD Review: Working for a Nuclear Free City, Businessmen & Ghosts

Dec 17, 2007 7:17 PM Dominic Umile (Writer)

Manchester's Working for a Nuclear Free City lugs an avalanche of songs stateside in the two-disc Businessmen & Ghosts. It packs the band's late-2006 UK debut and much more—from jittery, clamorous pop to shoegaze instrumentals, and an abundance of analog keyboards and pedal effects crowd their rehearsal space. "Troubled Son" and "Forever" spill over with delayed guitars and blurry psychedelia, not unlike the storm gusts of reverb and synthesizer washes that blow through "Asleep at the Wheel." Too much at once is imperative here.
