CD Review: Woodhands, Heart Attack

Toronto's Woodhands are known for their haphazardly groovin', thrashin' live shows, and they've managed to translate that elusive feel directly into this album. Setting down a foundation of peppy '80s synths, they then add in all the right elements, from the vocal growls of Dan Werb on the zany "Dancer" to the sharp yet smooth drum breaks of "Breaking Up." Much of the set seems recorded with raw edges purposefully intact, which adds to the energy; if you listen closely, you may even be able to mentally put yourself at a Woodhands live show, complete with pogo-ing crowds and classic keytar tones.
