CD Review: Why?, Alopecia

Mar 24, 2008 9:51 PM Dominic Umile (Writer)

The head-rattling efforts that dropped on Anticon.'s frothing fan base in '07, from sound chemists DJ Mayonnaise and Odd Nosdam, are instrumental in nature but hardly straight hip-hop. The third LP from Why? is also an adventurous romp, and the further it swings from hip-hop, the better. While the genre could use as many wordsmiths as it can get (vocalist Yoni Wolf is in top form on "These Few Presidents"), pieces like "Song of the Sad Assassin" or "Simeon's Dilemma," all romantic and swaddled in glockenspiel and uber-dramatic piano, bite a lot harder than any of Alopecia's talkie-rhyme stuff.
