AKAI UNVEILS THE PORTABLE MPC500

Akai has taken the wraps off of the new MPC500, the most portable MPC ever. It offers many of the same features users know from the MPC line, including sequencing, programming, expand-able memory and storage options, but it weighs less than 3 pounds and measures 10.5-by-6.9-by-1.7 inches. It has only 12 pads, rather than 16, and a two-line LCD menu to save space. And as a first for an MPC, it can be powered by 6 AA batteries (or with the included AC adapter). A 48-track sequencer features pattern-based and linear recording. The MPC500 comes with 16 MB of RAM (expandable to 128 MB) and a 32 MB CompactFlash card (cards up to 2 GB are compati-ble). Connectivity entails analog I/O, MIDI I/O and headphone jack. The unit also has a USB port for using the MPC500 as a mass storage device on a computer. A 48-track sequencer fea-tures pattern based and linear recording, and there are two onboard stereo effects and a Master effect. The MPC500 is a 32-voice drum/phrase sampler and is compatible with sounds from other MPCs and Akai samplers.
