Oct. 17: The 2007 Gong DJ Battle U.S. Finals

Oct 15, 2007 6:23 PM

Established in 2006, Roc Raida's Gong DJ Battle is the most important and authentic indie battle on the scene. In this competition, the most adept turntablists go head to head to impress a jury of pernsickity, battle scarred judges while two or three hosts instigate, snap on and play "good cop bad cop" with the DJs as well as the audience.

You thought DJ battles were boring? They run on? They're only for a geeky technical set who should really get outside more? Think again!

The judges have itchy gong fingers and no one is spared! Not girls! Not even 14 year olds! "He has to learn!" explained an unapologetic GW Theodore (who invented the scratch at age 13.)

If the judges aren't feeling someone, they gong.

If the hosts ask the judges to explain, accusations fly about biting beat juggles from a famous 1995 routine or proclamations on how only DJ so and so can use the Theme from S.W.A.T. The Gong DJ Battle is the rawest but somehow the funniest, too.

This year, Roc Raida branched out and scoured Miami, Baltimore, Los Angeles, and New York City for the Top 8 to represent at The 2007 Gong DJ Battle U.S. Finals, including Shmeeze, DJ Esquire, DJ Mike Delite, SPS, Supreme Sun Raven, DJ Image, DJ Flawless, and DJ As-One. Ring leaders include Lord Sear and Fat Fingaz.

Raida has also accomplished the impossible. His post battle showcase features a one-night-only reunion of members of The X-Men and The X-ecutioners. You heard it right! DJ Steve Dee, Sean C & Diamond J of the X-Men will join Roc Raida, Rob Swift, Mista Sinista, Total Eclipse, Precision, and Boogie Blind on stage! There's no counting how many belts, trophies, jackets, and titles they have collectively, but guaranteed, this is a once in a lifetime showcase.

It all goes down Wednesday, October 17th, 2007.

Doors open at 8pm. The battle begins at 10pm. All ages welcome. 21+ with ID to drink! The Knitting Factory is located at 74 Leonard St. (between Broadway and Church St) in lower Manhattan, NY 10013. Take the 1 train to Franklin. Buy your $12 advance tickets now at the Knitting Factory NYC box office (212.219.3132) or KnittingFactory.com. It is sure to be a sold out show.
