VICE RECORDINGS

Oct 1, 2005 12:00 PM

Style: All, none

Established: In 2002 by Vice magazine co-founders Suroosh Alvi, Gavin McInnes and Shane Smith in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Artists: Bloc Party, Chromeo, Death From Above 1979, Panthers, The Stills, The Streets, Vietnam

Essential Listening: Bloc Party, Silent Alarm (2005); Chromeo, She's in Control (2003); Death From Above 1979, You're a Woman, I'm a Machine (2004); Panthers, Things Are Strange (2004); The Stills, Logic Will Break Your Heart (2003); The Streets, Original Pirate Material (2002), A Grand Don't Come for Free (2004); Various Artists, Run the Road (2005)

Manifesto: “Our business philosophy is ‘punk-rock capitalism,’ Alvi says. “We've run the magazine with it for the past decade, and we apply the same concept to signing artists and releasing records. We work within the industry on our own terms — an indie label with a joint venture with Atlantic Records. Our goal is to sell tons of fucking records that aren't boring. We refuse to be relegated to obscurity.”

A&R Philosophy: “We sign whatever we're into at any given time,” Alvi says. “We accept demos.”

Upcoming: This fall, look out for Bloc Party and Death From Above 1979 remix albums as well as the all-star UNICEF charity single “Do They Know It's Hallowe'en” and the Run the Road, Vol. 2 grime comp. And in 2006, get ready for new albums from the entire Vice roster. On the live front, catch Bloc Party, DFA 1979 and The Stills.
