UBIQUITY
Mar 1, 2007 12:00 PM
Style: Anything from hip-hop and singer-songwriters to cutting-edge club music
Established: In San Francisco, Calif., by Jody and Michael McFadin in 1990
Artists: Breakestra, Greyboy, Shawn Lee, Nino Moschella, Nomo, Owusu and Hannibal, PPP, Radio Citizen, Ohmega Watts and many more
Essential Listening: Greyboy, Freestylin (1994); Beatless, Life Mirrors (2001); As One, 21st Century Soul (2004); PPP, Triple P (2005); Ohmega Watts, The Find (2005); Radio Citizen, Berlin Serengeti (2006); Shawn Lee, Voices and Choices (2007)
Manifesto: “We're a collection of DJs, surfers, skaters, designers, promoters, musicians, record nerds, yoga freaks, film makers and yo-yo champs,” says Andrew Jervis, A&R, vice president. “To stay true to our listeners and ourselves, we've only ever released music that we like. At the moment the acts on our roster might deliver lo-fi soul, some crackin'-but-edgy hip-hop, forward-thinking dub 'n' funk, cosmic afro-beat and the occasional club joint. We also preserve and re-issue jazz, soul and funk from eras gone by.”
A&R Philosophy: “We like people who push the limits, innovators, entertainers, extraverts, and we love hard-working types,” Jervis says. “We accept demos from acts who know what Ubiquity is about. Please don't send one if you've never been to the Website or heard one of our records. We listen to everything that comes through the door, and you will get a response, so no need to check in, follow up or freak out unless it's been months since you mailed us.”
Upcoming: “2007 is shaping up to be a good year with folks like Ohmega Watts, PPP, Shawn Lee and Greyboy returning with new albums,” Jervis says. “We'll also have albums by Connie Price, The Keystones and new acts such as West Coast-dub band The Lions.”
