Style: House, techno, electronic, experimental rock — essentially anything with a healthy dose of punk rock.
Established: 2001 in Los Angeles, Calif., by Daniel Mansury. In full-force since 2005.
Artists: Ponce De Leon, Alberto Feliciano, Fruits & Nuts, Lola Garrett, Faruk Green, Daniel Mansury, The Million Million, Wantingseed, Guy Worthless.
Essential Listening: Zaz, Zaranoid (2001); The Million Million, Infidel Cashflow (2004); Ponce De Leon, Ponce De Leon (2005); Various Artists, Drink as if No One Is Dancing (2005, reflects label history from 2001-2004)
Manifesto: “We won't try to save the world,” Mansury says. “We'll leave that to Bono. We won't stop eating meat just because Morrissey told Moby to say so. We didn't vote because P. Diddy threatened us with death. We won't do yoga. It enhanced Sting's stamina. We won't go Jebus — yes, Jebus — or kabbalah on you, trends only Madonna can predict. We won't go L. Ron on you. Science fiction is passé. The future is now. We won't go to rehab. Nobody would care. We don't hope. THORN01, not doing anything. Quality counterculture/counter culture since 2001.”
A&R Philosophy: “We do not believe in signing artists without having had a drink with them,” Mansury says. “Almost anybody can be ‘lucky’ and make one somewhat-decent track. We try to establish a long-term relationship with our artists. Demos… eh, maybe in 2006 you can stop wasting postage and contact us through www.myspace.com/thorn01. We may not respond, but we'll try to listen to everything.”
Upcoming: Alberto Feliciano The Shuttle (2006); 12-inch records by Faruk Green and Guy Worthless; and Yuno, The Glances You Give Me (2006), remixed by Lola Garrett, Turbotito and Daniel Mansury. “If you haven't seen it yet, there's no way around ‘The Island of Florida: A Foundation Myth,’ a musical featuring Ponce De Leon's music,” Mansury says.
