SWEET RELIEF

Like so many others confounded by the devastation wrought upon Southeast Asia by the Dec. 26, 2004, tsunami, members of the dance-music community took action to raise funds to help the survivors. From Nigel Richards in Miami to Deep Dish in Washington, D.C., to Satoshi Tomiie, Hector Romero and Steve Porter in New York, DJs gave their time around the world to benefit groups such as Unicef and the Red Cross. In San Francisco, Paul Oakenfold joined forces with Marques Wyatt, Behrouz, Julius Papp, DJ Kramer and others for a benefit at Ruby Skye on Jan. 27. Organized by Release San Francisco, the city's dance community presented a unified front to raise money for CARE International and Save the Children. The event raised $32,762, and every cent of the proceeds — from the door take to the bar earnings to even the staff's tips (some employees even worked for free) — went to these two organizations.
