SMALLTOWN SUPERSOUND

Style: Indie/electronic/pop

Established: In 1993 by Joakim Haugland in the small town of Flekkefjord in the south of Norway

Artists: 120 Days, Arp, Kim Hiorthøy, Lars Horntveth, Jaga Jazzist, Lindstrøm, Mental Overdrive, Bjørn Torske, Toy, Tussle

Essential Listening: Kim Hiorthøy, Hei (2000); Jaga Jazzist, A Livingroom Hush (2003); Lars Horntveth, Pooka (2004); Sonic Youth/Mats Gustafsson, Hidros 3 (2004); 120 Days, 120 Days (2006)

Manifesto: “Our philosophy is to release quality music,” Haugland says. “I want the label to be broad and diverse; and at the same time, there is a similar thread going through all the artists and the releases. I want people to get that Smalltown Supersound feeling.”

A&R Philosophy: “Everything depends on my taste in music,” Haugland says. “My taste can change quite often, so actually I don't have any limitations other than that I need to feel that it fits with the label and my taste.”

Upcoming: “Look for new releases from 120 Days, Kim Hiorthøy, Bjørn Torske, Tussle, Arp and Lars Horntveth, as well as a Jaga Jazzist DVD,” Haugland says. “I think 2007 will be an exciting year for us.”
