SEA CHANGE

Jan 1, 2006 12:00 PM, Remix Editor, Kylee Swenson

Maybe it's because I, Kylee, grew up in the same house from age 5 to 18 in a very safe, rural town in Minnesota, but change freaks me the hell out. Still, when you feel the urge and the time is right, it's good to give in to the changing tides. That's why I came to California and learned to love avocado. That's why I came to Remix. Transformations and new situations are good.

Here, at the turn of the New Year, Remix faces some big changes. Managing Editor Erin Hutton and Technology Editor Robert Hanson are blowing this pop stand and heading down south to the sunny skies of Los Angeles. They're not leaving the music industry, though, so if you were fortunate enough to meet these supercool co-workers of mine at a prior Remix Hotel or NAMM conference, you may see them yet again at future events.

I must admit I have had my days of feeling sorry for myself. After all, Erin and Rob made working here breezy like Easy Cheese. For the past five and six years, respectively, Erin and Rob have been part of the Remix, Mix and Electronic Musician family. Erin worked on the very first issue of Remix that went monthly (January 2001). And Erin and Rob have been a major force in building up Remix from its fledgling days to what it is today. I love this magazine, and I owe a huge debt of gratitude to Erin and Rob for that. It's because of their quick wit, sure-footed opinions, great writing and editing skills and nonstop flow of ideas that this magazine rules as much as I believe it does.

Although I'm going to be killing my brain with beer for quite some time to get over losing Erin and Rob, I can also heave a major sigh of relief. I've been blessed a second time with the opportunity to work with two great editors: New Remix Technology Editor Markkus Rovito and Assistant Editor Lori Kennedy join us for the February 2006 issue and onward. Markkus (whom I worked down the hall from when I was at Guitar Player and he at Keyboard) comes to us from Mac Home magazine. And Lori moves from right down the hall (leaving her post as Copy Editor at Electronic Musician). I'm confident that Markkus and Lori's enthusiasm, ideas and experience will help carry us through 2006 with flying colors.

And there's yet more change to mention. With the January 2006 issue, you'll notice a new column, “Digital DJ,” written by digital DJ and laptop-performance instructor Ean Golden. We're taking our DJ column (formerly “Turntablist Techniques”) into the ever-evolving times — but we promise we won't abandon you vinyl and scratch DJs!

Also, if you're a subscriber, you'll notice that this issue was polybagged with a special 13th issue titled “Go Forward, Move Ahead.” It's fitting, with all this change, that we would deliver an extra issue of exclusive interviews (including DJ Shadow, Photek, Goldfrapp and many more), predictions and products to reveal all that's new and exciting in our not-so-distant future. And for those of you who bought this issue on the newsstand, don't fret — we'll make articles from the special issue available to you at www.remixmag.com.

Change is scary, yes. It's also exciting. It's going to be a good year, so stay tuned.
