ROPEADOPE

May 1, 2003 12:00 PM

Style: Everything Established: In 1999, by Andy Hurwitz in New York City Artists: “We do mostly one-offs,” Hurwitz says. “We don't believe in binding artists to long-term contracts. We can do a better job than most any label on the planet, and if an artist isn't happy, he or she is free to leave. That said, we've done records with King Britt, DJ Logic, Kid Koala, Scratch (from The Roots), Carl Craig and many more in many styles.”

Essential Listening: DJ Logic, Project Logic (1999); The Philadelphia Experiment, The Philadelphia Experiment (2001); The Word, The Word (2001); Spanish Harlem Orchestra, Un Gran Dia en el Barrio (2002)

Manifesto: “Ropeadope is about representing the Ropeadope style, standing strong, being real,” Hurwitz says.

A&R Philosophy: “This is hard to pin down,” Hurwitz says. “We have this weird test: It's either Ropeadope or it's not. We have records ranging from salsa to gospel to straight-ahead jazz to hip-hop and everything in between. It has to be real and original. That's it.”

Upcoming: Carl Craig, The Detroit Experiment; Charlie Hunter Quintet, Right Now Move; The New Deal, Live in NYC; The Memphis Experiment Contact: Ropeadope; e-mail info@ropeadope.com; Web www.ropeadope.com
