Second Sun's Antoine Toupin and Adam Cavaluzzi have been doing everything in their power to keep the underground scene buzzing with their catchy club singles. So at a live performance supporting their debut artist album, Inside Out (System, 2005), you'd expect them to come outright with headphones and turntable twists, but it just wasn't so at New York's Canal Room on April 28. At first glance, the two appeared more like rock stars, especially with their stage-show antics and frontman Toupin's mohawk.
Second Sun's Thursday-night gig was an intense affair that saw the duo dabbling in trance, breaks, electro and pop. Toupin put a charismatic face to the group that was surpassed only by his sheer enthusiasm to get the audience on the dancefloor. During every track, he juggled singing, sample tweaking, guitar playing and hyping the crowd while Cavaluzzi kept the nonstop beats in check with an energetic fervor.
Second Sun then ramped it up toward the end of the set with a few unpredictable moments: Enter a dreamy duet with former teen pop star Tiffany during “He Said She Said” and an encore remake of Depeche Mode's “Dream On.” Second Sun will be on tour throughout the U.S., Canada and Europe (including select dates with Tiffany) until the end of August.
