GET ON THE RIGHT COAST

In the audio world, October means more than just setting back your clock and thinking up a creative costume idea: The fall season also means it's time for the annual AES Convention, which was held Oct. 7-10 in New York. Although the three-hour time difference and two extra hours of bar time made it a bit difficult for the Remix staff members to make all of their morning appointments (sorry about that), they did manage to get the scoop on some great new products.
For the DAW nation, Digidesign unveiled the long-awaited Pro Tools 7 for Mac OS X and Windows XP. The upgrade covers all Pro Tools|HD, LE and M-Powered platforms. Pro Tools 7 delivers dozens of long-requested features, including enhanced MIDI functionality, instrument tracks, REX- and ACID-file support, a streamlined user interface and much more. Universal Audio released the new UAD-1 Flex-Pak, which users can use to build their own plug-in suites for the UAD-1 DSP card. Waves showed off two new plug-ins called Tune and DeBreath: Tune is a new pitch-correction tool, and DeBreath is designed to remove un-wanted breath sounds from vocals. Spectrasonics showed off the updated Stylus RMX 1.5, which includes a host of exciting refinements.
For the guitar player, the Native Instruments booth was the place to be: The company showed off its new Guitar Rig 2, which boasts more guitar- and bass-amp emulations, additional effects and a redesigned foot controller. NI also lifted the curtain on B4 II. But not to be outdone, IK Multimedia released AmpliTube 2, which includes more than 80 guitar amps, effects and more. On the hardware front, E-mu entered the monitor game with its new PM5 Precision Monitors. And Sony showed off the pricey but impressive PCM-DI, a high-end portable recorder.
