REMIX HOTEL HEARTS CHICAGO

For those who wondered when it would ever happen, Remix Hotel finally roamed its way to the Midwest, settling in at the Hard Rock Hotel Chicago Aug. 19-21. Slightly different from the typical three-day Miami and New York events, this Remix Hotel partnered with the Global Mixx DJ Retreat, an educational weekend for the urban DJ community. But Remix Hotel Chicago continued the tradition of three full days of product demos, master classes, workshops and performances with Technology Partners Apple, Ableton, Columbia College, Digidesign, M-Audio, Midwest Stereo, Ortofon, Pioneer, Rane, Serato and additional sponsors.
Thanks to Columbia College's WCRX underground radio, the registration area was a continuous all-out party pumping out the best of Chicago house with DJ sets by Steve “Silk” Hurley, Roy Davis Jr. and others. Venturing farther inside, attendees were treated to Logic Pro 7, Soundtrack Pro and iPod Shuffle giveaways by Apple; Scratch Live demos at the Rane and Serato space; and even an intimate Q&A with Grayarea's McRae and Dave Ruin in the M-Audio room. But the spotlight truly shone on Birdy Nam Nam, a four-man-strong turntablism force from France, brought to Remix Hotel courtesy of Ortofon. Of course, these daytime events and appearances weren't the only things to see and hear during the weekend, as Remix Hotel set up plenty of nighttime afterparties at places like Sound-Bar, Zentra, Vision and Smart Bar. And Remix even attended the screening of the new Chicago-house documentary The Unusual Suspects and led a Q&A with the film's director, Chip E. How's that for an inaugural weekend?
