STRONG ARM OF THE LAW
Music production is more a freelance game, which is why ModernBeats has put out two CD-ROMs — Music Contracts Vol. 1 and 2 ($49.95 each; www.modernbeats.com). The first disc has eight producer agreements for working with artists or labels and addresses royalty and copyright concerns. Contracts for working with session musicians, songwriters, licensors for video and more fill out the second disc. Both were prepared by an entertainment lawyer but should not be seen as substitutes for professional legal counsel.
GIRLS! GIRLS! CHARITY!
Hurry up! If you're reading this right after the New Year, there's still time to sign up for the Mötley Cruise (www.motleycruise.org) from January 12-15! That's right: For four days and three nights, you could party on a Carnival Cruise from Miami to the Bahamas with Mötley Crüe's Vince Neil. If the 24-hour room service, swimming pools, miniature golf, casino and live performance from Neil's band aren't enough, then maybe it will be more persuasive for you to know that the boat activities will raise money for the Skylar Neil Memorial Foundation. Now you have to go!
TV ON THE TURNTABLE
At long last: Two cult-classic hip-hop documentaries have come together in a special DVD box set to satisfy your underground film needs. Scratch vs Freestyle (Palm Pictures, 2006; $29.98) contains not only the Scratch and Freestyle DVDs, but also special bonus features. Scratch includes director and producer commentary, tips on how to rock a party with DJ Z-Trip and a DIY lesson with DJ Qbert, all in 5.1 Dolby Digital and 2.0 Dolby Stereo. Freestyle has exclusive freestyles, deleted scenes, additional footage and interviews with Aesop Rock, El-P and Slug of Atmosphere, among others.
