PUTTIN' OUT THE HITS
Wanna get the inside scoop on how to produce a hit record? Then pick up a copy of the aptly named Producing Hit Records (Schirmer Trade Books, 2006) by David John Farinella. Learn from some of the most successful producers — including Rick Rubin (Beastie Boys, Run-DMC), Dave Jerden (Jane's Addiction, Red Hot Chili Peppers) and David Fridmann (The Flaming Lips, Sparklehorse) — about topics such as the evolution of today's producers, the artist as producer, label politics, selecting a studio and managing a budget.
WEBSITE OF THE MONTH
Would you pay $2 for an eight-second sample? What if that sample was the perfect explosion sound effect for a track intro or a funky ethnic drum loop that's just right for a chorus? At Discovery Downloader (www.discoverysound.com), you buy only the samples you want and only after previewing them. The site contains many thousands of professionally produced samples from the Discovery Firm libraries, and excellent search features let you find the genre, file format, instrument, tempo and key that you want in seconds.
CENTER STAGE
Recorded in Leuven, Belgium in May 2005, the Moby. Live (Mute, 2006) DVD shows one night in Moby's Hotel Tour in front of 6,000 fans. With Moby's t-shirt-and-jeans aesthetic and subdued guitar playing, the show could have been a bland one, but a good backing band, some big dance tracks and a sweet light show kept the audience entertained. With bonus videos (including a sad, animated stray cat in “Dream About Me”) and a remix CD with reworkings by Tiga, Mylo and more, Moby fans should be stoked.
