FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, HELP!
If you're a novice producer who raises a fist of damnation every time you encounter technical terms that go over your head, fear not. Get the second edition of Home Recording for Musicians — for Dummies (Wiley), by Jeff Strong. You'll learn the basics of putting together a home studio and get info on MIDI, multitrack recording, editing, mixing, miking instruments and more. The text also features useful basic tips, such as layering beats and mixing in mono. Read it and see how much more this whole production thing begins to click.
ATARI'S REVENGE
If you're looking to kill some time at work, head over to www.tripletsandus.com/80s/80s_games/arcade.htm. This site is maintained by a family in Florida with a healthy appreciation for all things '80s. The site includes sound files from various movies and TV shows and other bits of nostalgia, but best of all, there is an entire section dedicated to classic video games such as Missile Command, Duck Hunt and Spy Hunter. Many games have been rewritten to work with most Web browsers for some instant online gratification. Check your Internet plug-ins, and don't let your boss catch you.
SHANGHAI SURPRISE
Sure, you can attend DJ schools like Norcal and Scratch DJ Academy here in the U.S., but how about snagging a DJ internship — in China, no less? Through Global Education Corporation, you can do just that in its Shanghai Urban Music Project. With sessions beginning in June, July, September and February, the Project welcomes music majors to intern at a local or campus radio station and attend classes at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, with opportunities for additional cultural excursions and local DJ performances. Check it out at www.globaledcorp.com.
