MOVE OVER, CLAY AIKEN
To capitalize on the success of American Idol, judges Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson have released the Ultimate Voice Coach (Alpha Video, 2005) DVD and CD — promising that you, too, can learn to sing like a star. Vocal practice is generally pretty creepy to watch, and these lessons (taught by Gary Catona and Ron Anderson) are just that. But if you're a performing singer, you should be embarrassing yourself with vocal practices; it will make a difference. Just don't tell anyone you heard it from Remix. Check out www.ultimatevoicecoach.com.
WEBSITE OF THE MONTH
The suits at Microsoft aren't all spreadsheets and oversize glasses: They have an ear to the DJ/producer market, as well. Crossfader (www.crossfader.com) is Microsoft's new online community for “the global electronic artist.” With user forums, artist features, product tutorials, downloads and genre news, the site encourages artists to share ideas and information about music technology based on the Windows Media platform. Registration is free, and users can set up their own profile pages — if they can tear themselves away from Myspace.com, that is.
ROCK OUT WITH YOUR CAMPOUT
Remember when camp meant nerdy kids, gross food and mosquito bites? Well, in Lake Arrowhead, Calif., camp is a bit more high-end thanks to Pali Overnight Adventures, which features Rock Star Camp for ages 12 to 16. There, kids meet with professional singers, songwriters and producers to learn professional techniques in state-of-the-art studios and create their own CDs. But they may need to break into their college funds to do so: A one-week stay is $1,435. For info, visit www.paliadventures.com.
