OPEN LABS NEKO 64 GEN2

Jan 1, 2006 12:00 PM, Robert Hanson

Throughout 2006, you're going to be hearing a lot about dual-core processors. But rather than wait to see what the future holds, take a look at the new Open Labs NeKo 64 Gen2. Based around a 2GHz Athlon dual-core 64-bit processor, the new NeKo is touted as the world's first 64-bit keyboard instrument. For those who are not familiar with the NeKo line, imagine a keyboard instrument that houses an optimized PC, a touchscreen interface, a multioctave keyboard and audio and MIDI I/O. And it can run on any PC DAW or soft synth at blazing speed. Sound enticing? The new NeKo includes a host of exciting new features, such as RunSilent, a feature that dynamically controls CPU speed and reduces temperature and fan speeds when ultraquiet operation is required; PowerRush, a technology that intelligently detects system load and automatically boosts performance by increasing CPU clock speed on the fly; and support for Serial ATA 3Gb/s, the next generation of hard drives that doubles current bus bandwidth for high-speed data transfers. And aside from that, the top-of-the-line NeKo comes standard with 512 MB of RAM (upgradable to 8 GB), an 80GB 7,200 rpm hard drive (with three additional 3.5-inch drive bays), a DVD-Combo drive (upgradable to a DVD burner), a 15-inch color LCD touchscreen, 10 channels of audio I/O, Gigabit Ethernet/FireWire/USB 2.0, MIDI I/O, S/PDIF, word clock and more.
