Apr 1, 2007 12:00 PM
Style: Indie, electro, healing and easy listening
Established: “Modular was established in 1998 by Stephen Pavlovic, who at the time was promoting tours for the likes of Nirvana, My Bloody Valentine, Pavement, Beck, Fat Boy Slim, the Beastie Boys, etc.,” says Glen Goetze, A&R. “He was getting inundated with demo tapes from bands who wanted to play on the bill, one of which was from a band who called themselves Quentin's Brittle Bones, who went on to change their name to The Avalanches, and thus Modular was born.”
Artists: The Avalanches, The Black Keys, Blues Explosion, Bumblebeez, Chromeo, Colder, Cut Copy, The Ghosts, Klaxons, MSTRKRFT, New Young Pony Club, The Presets, Softlightes, Van She, Wolfmother, Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Essential Listening: Ben Lee, Breathing Tornadoes (1998); The Living End, The Living End (1998); The Avalanches, Since I Left You (2001); Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Fever to Tell (2003); Cut Copy, Bright Like Neon Love (2004); The Presets, Beams (2005); Wolfmother, Wolfmother (2005)
Manifesto: “Putting the magic back into the mountain,” Goetze says.
A&R Philosophy: “We generally look for artists with sharp haircuts, and it usually helps if we like the band, too,” Goetze says. “We're always accepting demos.”
Upcoming: “Future essentials coming in 2007 include albums from Bumblebeez, New Young Pony Club, Softlightes, Klaxons, Cut Copy, The Presets, The Avalanches and Leave Them All Behind Vol. 2,” Goetze says.
