THE LIFE AQUATIC

DJs, bands and 2,000 fans set sail for the high seas Jan. 7 on Jam Cruise 4, a weeklong adventure of bands thrashin' and fans splashin' in the sun. The Italian cruise liner MSC Lirica departed Florida and traveled through the Caribbean while fans enjoyed the genre-mixing music taking place in various venues on the ship.
In addition to sets from returning Jam Cruise bands, the newly reunited Digable Planets played old-school favorites and a few new gems. Meanwhile, several electronic acts — including Diplo, Boom Bip and DJ Lorin (aka Bassnectar) — were pitching in to keep the party going until sunrise. And Florida natives Souleye & Sleepyhead were crowned kings (in the electronic/hip-hop category) of the Remix and Sonicbids — sponsored new-talent contest. Most of the featured acts performed twice, so if you were too busy working on your tan in the afternoon, chances are you could catch them playing late at night somewhere else, perhaps in the Blue Room Disco or in the Jam Room, where musicians gathered to take part in improvisational jams until dawn.
With three ports of call — Ocho Rios, Jamaica; the Grand Cayman Islands; and Costa Maya, Mexico — many music fans departed the ship to soak up the sun and relax on the beach. The more ambitious travelers took trips to Mayan ruins in Mexico or went snorkeling. Of course, some fans slept all day and didn't make it off the boat — saving precious energy for the late-night events. If you're looking for a ship for pure rest and relaxation, you might be better off on The Love Boat.
