HIP-HOP FOR TEACHER

Jun 1, 2005 12:00 PM

Since when did field trips get so cool? On April 8, 100 grade-schoolers from P.S. 34 and P.S. 188 in Manhattan met up with guest teacher Talib Kweli at Gibson Studios for the launch of Harman: How to Listen, a program that brings musicians and students together to promote the importance of music education. Sponsored by Harman International, the program's eighth season will make stops in five cities — including New York, Detroit, Phoenix, Miami and Baltimore — covering 21 inner-city schools, with Harman to donate sound equipment to each. At the launch, Kweli shared his experiences with hip-hop and how it opened him up to other types of music, as well as encouraged the kids to make music a primary focus in their lives and even led them in a live reworking of his single “Get By.” The students also had a chance to sing and breakdance onstage while Kweli handled mic duties. “When children learn how to listen to music, it makes them better listeners in society in general,” Kweli says.
