THE FUTURE IS NOW
Jan 1, 2006 12:00 PM, Kylee Swenson Editor
Because it's always fun to look ahead and see what's in store for the world musicwise, we at Remix decided to make an entire issue about the future. Well, to be truthful, it only stretches to as far as December 2006 (our psychic abilities are only so strong), but there's a lot to say about this brand-new year ahead of us.
To all of you loyal subscribers out there, this one's for you. We want to thank you for sticking with us throughout the years, so although you may see this special 13th issue of Remix elsewhere — such as at the January NAMM show in Los Angeles and in bits and pieces on www.remixmag.com — you won't be able to pick up this issue on newsstands. That means only you will get the inside, exclusive scoop on what DJ Shadow, Photek, Gabriel & Dresden, Lady Sovereign and others have in store for their albums coming out later this year. And as for the artists with first-quarter releases, we get a preliminary look at what went down in the studios of Junkie XL, Goldfrapp, Coldcut and others. Meanwhile, look out for the expanded feature stories on Coldcut and Goldfrapp in the February and March issues of Remix.
But the future doesn't stop with artists. We have a special tech treat for you with a feature on the future of DAW computing. You'll be introduced to multicores and learn what will happen as the bits get deeper and deeper. You won't want to miss it.
As part of our cover story, “Go Forward, Move Ahead,” you'll also get a glimpse at what 2006 holds for new product releases as well as predictions about where we're headed in terms of digital music services, live music, free Wi-Fi and more. And even though we normally devote our final page to respecting a music pioneer, this time we're flipping the script (yeah, we know that's tired hip-hop lingo right there) and calling it “No Respect.” The victim of the diss? Poor old Opcode OMS, which got left in the dust with the introduction of Mac OS X.
At any rate, please enjoy this as our New Year's present to you. And please don't hold it against us if, come 2007, we didn't nail every single prediction. We are human, after all. We might be able to see into the future, but we don't know how to, say, fly while wearing a cape, pick up two-ton cars with one hand or see through decades of time. But we do know this: The technology advancements will roar on. So in the wise words of Devo: Go forward. Move ahead. Try to detect it. It's not too late!
