FATCAT RECORDS

Nov 1, 2005 12:00 PM

Style: “We try to remain open to the possibility of releasing anything that moves and intrigues us, be it electronic or acoustic or based in hip-hop, classical, folk, electronica, noise, techno, rock, electro-acoustic, concrete, African trance or whatever,” says FatCat's Dave Howell.

Established: Originally as a record shop outside of London in 1990, FatCat became a full-time label in 1998, opening a New York office in 2005.

Artists: Amandine, Animal Collective, Vashti Bunyan, Charlottefield, Crescent, Drowsy, David Grubbs, Mice Parade, Múm, The Mutts, Max Richter, Sigur Ros, Songs of Green Pheasant, Stromba, Aoki Takamasa + Tujiko Noriko

Essential Listening: Animal Collective, Feels (2005); Björk mit Funkstorung, “All Is Full of Love” (1998); Black Dice, Beaches & Canyons (2003); Mice Parade, Bem-Vinda Vontade (2005); Múm, Finally We Are No One (2002); Sigur Ros, Ágaetis Byrjun (2000); Various Artists, 8, 8.5, 9, Remixes (1999), Branches and Routes (2003), Split Series 9-16 (2004)

Manifesto: “We aim to release a stream of amazing and varied music that inspires us, and hopefully others, to try and help support good music and the work of artists who we believe in,” Howell says.

A&R Philosophy: “The artists who excite us the most are the ones who are moving between things or at the edges of things, who are making odd connections or approaching music in interesting ways,” Howell continues. “We currently receive about 10 demos a day, every single one of which is listened and replied to.”

Upcoming: Look for new releases from Animal Collective and Vashti Bunyan. AC will tour Europe this fall and Japan in the spring.
