Editor's Note: Spring (Er, Summer) Cleaning

Jul 1, 2008 12:00 PM, By Kylee Swenson, Editor

If you were a fan of our “Shop.Talk.” column, you'll notice it's not in this issue. But wait — before you send us angry e-mails, rest assured it will resurface in new form in the August issue. After a good seven-year run, we thought it was time to shift gears. It's a sad truth, but DJs are getting their tracks more and more from online sources rather than mom-and-pop record shops. We still want DJs to talk about their favorite tracks of the month, though, so stay tuned for the 2008 version of the column, “Perfect 10,” starting out with the supercool Tokyo-residing DJ/producer, Metaform.

Also an end of an era: This issue marks the last “Respect” column. Over the years, we've respected more than 80 artists, inventors, producers, DJs and influencers in music. But to keep things fresh, it's good to switch things up. Based on the lack of feedback about that particular column, “Respect” wasn't the most popular kid in school. We enjoyed educating our readers and ourselves about the pioneers and innovators in music, but it's important that we devote space to what you want most. Please keep sending your e-mails (to remixeditorial@remixmag.com) about what you want to see in the magazine and what you could live without. If it turns out that you now hate us for killing “Respect,” we'll see about reinstating it in a future issue.

Meanwhile, as our audience grows online, there's a need for more and more content to feed the hungry music-producing minds out there. So we've decided to work on creating a bunch of exclusive online content in the coming months. Just 'cause there's a cap on how much we can fit in the magazine doesn't mean we have to stop delivering reviews, production tips and artist interviews; there's practically endless space at remixmag.com.

One thing is for sure: The readers of Remix and its sister magazines Mix and EM are not shy about their opinions. We will definitely not attempt to pull a fast one on you because, for example, if we're wrong about a sampling workstation's sampling rate by even a fraction, you'll let us know. Hey, it shows you care, right?

Speaking of your comments, I'm going to come clean about something: Sometimes we assign a story on an artist (for example, Tommy Lee and Portishead) partly because we know it will stir the pot. With Mr. Lee, we all know him as a very famous drummer — less so for his new fame as a DJ. But while you may not respect his DJ skills, you gotta admit he is entertaining, and in the same way that a tabloid magazine reports on shocking details of a celebrity's life, covering someone like Lee makes for some interesting comments from readers. It's our way of making sure you're all awake. And while I've been a fan of Portishead for over a decade, I was really interested in what you'd have to say about some of Geoff Barrow's comments in the May cover story. Excited, really. And indeed, you responded. Check it out in this month's “Envelope Filter” section. Awesome.
