Another Dimension

It's not often that Remix gets to wear 3-D glasses in the office, but considering the VJ/DJ/scratch multimedia mash-ups Mike Relm is known for, it wasn't surprising to find the blue-and-red lenses crammed in with his latest DVD, Clown Alley (Radio Fried Films, 2008). Outside of his turntablist and VJ fanbase, Relm's live show recently caught fire in the big leagues, literally in the case of his performance at a San Francisco Giants/Oakland A's baseball game, and also including arena shows opening for Blue Man Group and the closing ceremonies of the Pan Am Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Released on April Fools' Day, Clown Alley provides plenty of crack-up moments. One comedic pairing is the Chappelle's Show barbershop scene with John Mayer, ?uestlove and Dave Chappelle, backed and scratched with Simon and Garfunkel's “The Sound of Silence.” And in the skits between Relm's live performances, you'll get to put your 3-D glasses on and watch the VJ get chased around by a crazy, suit-wearing clown and later see Relm take out two violent clowns with Silly String. Between the skits, a mash-up of The Outfield's “Your Love” with the ridiculous puppet-doll sex scene of Team America: World Police, an homage to Saturday morning cartoons and a faux interview between Relm and Larry King, Clown Alley is good entertainment for after-work smoke-outs and a suitable distraction from Sunday-morning hangovers.
