CARPARK, ACUTE & PAW TRACKS

Jan 1, 2006 12:00 PM

Style: Three labels under one roof — Carpark sees the most electronic releases; Acute focuses on post-punk reissues; and Paw Tracks can be just about anything.

Established: Todd Hyman started Carpark in New York in 1999 and Acute, with Dan Selzer, in 2002. Paw Tracks, Animal Collective's label, surfaced in 2003.

Artists: Animal Collective, Ariel Pink, Belong, Glenn Branca, Greg Davis, Dinky, Jane, Jake Mandell, Marumari, Takagi Masakatsu, Metal Urbain, Montag, Panda Bear, Peppermints, Signer, Keith Fullerton Whitman

Essential Listening: Animal Collective, Here Comes the Indian (Paw Tracks, 2003); Ariel Pink, Worn Copy (Paw Tracks, 2005); Glenn Branca, The Ascension (Acute, 2003); Casino Versus Japan, Whole Numbers Play the Basics (Carpark, 2002); Greg Davis, Arbor (Carpark, 2002); Metal Urbain, Anarchy in Paris! (Acute, 2004); Montag, Alone Not Alone (Carpark, 2005)

Manifesto: “We're just releasing music that we love,” Hyman says. “Our goal is to try and get the music into as many ears as possible.”

A&R Philosophy: “I can't articulate what we are looking for,” Hyman continues. “Ultimately, we have to think it's special — being honest and true is a good start. We like personality in music, and we do accept demos.”

Upcoming: Keep your eye out for new releases from Animal Collective, Ariel Pink, Casino Versus Japan, Montag and new groups Belong and Terrestrial Tones (featuring Dave Portner from AC and Eric Copeland from Black Dice). Also, catch Ariel Pink on the road for most of 2006.
