CAN'T STOP, WON'T STOP

May 1, 2006 12:00 PM, Kylee Swenson

There's nothing like a good challenge to make you feel like you really accomplished something. That's the case with the fourth annual Remix Hotel Miami, which took place March 22-24 at the swank National Hotel in South Beach. Manufacturers set up shop for demos and clinics in poolside cabanas. But with Microsoft, Apple, Akai, Alesis, Numark, Roland, Rane, Serato, Mackie, Moog, Ableton, Digidesign, Denon, Pioneer, Native Instruments, M-Audio, Access, Stanton and more all pulling massive amounts of electrical power at once, there were a few moments in the dark. Okay, it was really quite a few moments, but a generator was brought in and saved the day. Then, on day two, torrential rains overflowed the pool and had people ducking for cover in the cabanas and inside the hotel at the M3 panels (which included keynote speakers Coldcut and Wired Editor-in-Chief Chris Anderson).

Despite a couple setbacks, the event brought a record 7,000 people through its doors. And during the sunshine hours, the Beatport stage by the pool was packed, featuring live performances and DJ sets by Boom Boom Satellites, DJ Krush, Bad Boy Bill, Kaskade, James Zabiela, Richard “Humpty” Vission and more. Meanwhile, Junkie XL, Sander Kleinenberg, Roger Sanchez and Josh Gabriel (of Gabriel & Dresden) hosted demos in the cabanas. And down the street at the Surfcomber hotel, our partner event, M3, had yet another stage of nonstop action, including performances by Gilles Peterson, Lady Sovereign, Peter Kruder, the Juan Maclean, Hot Chip, Jazzanova, Louie Vega, Coldcut, Vitalic, Richie Hawtin and many more. Best of all, no one got struck by lightning, and there was even a little sun time on the beach. Next up, Remix Hotel NYC in June!
