ANOTHER BITE OUTTA THE BIG APPLE

Aug 1, 2005 12:00 PM

New York has certainly been good to the Remix Hotel — and its third stop in the Big Apple, June 3-5, at SAE NY proved another resounding success. More than 3,500 budding and veteran producers, engineers, DJs, MCs and artists crowded in for another three days of product demos, master classes and special-guest appearances. Although the SAE halls didn't provide much relief from the 100-degree New York heat, the attendees didn't seem to mind thanks to plenty of star-studded action with RHNYC's Technology Partners. Chuck D and Johnny Juice dropped by the Cakewalk station to discuss the production of the new Public Enemy record; Stanton brought in Josh Wink and Photek Records' Alien Tom; Digidesign and M-Audio hosted DXT and Liquid Todd; and DJ Rap made an appearance in the Apple room for a Logic Pro 7 demo.

The Remix/SAE room provided another revolving door of action, starting with Sonicbids-sponsored DJ performances (including an intriguing Ableton Live and two-turntable set by Vancouver's No Luck Club). SAE then took over the room for workshops about topics such as creating a hit song, remixing with Digidesign Pro Tools and making house arrangements with Logic. Following that, Remix crammed in three panels each day and packed in way more people than the room could handle (both heatwise and sizewise), with people spilling outside trying to get a glimpse of the business, production and DJ-related panels. A handful of discussions were dished up about copyright law and file sharing, software versus hardware, producing versus beat making, the evolution of the DJ and more. Thanks to founding Public Enemy producer Hank Shocklee, Prince Paul, Pete Rock, King Britt, Marley Marl, Needlz, Jeru the Damaja, Jae Millz, Cipha Sounds, Consequence, Royce da 5'9", Dame Grease, DJ Rap, John Creamer, Mathematics, U-God and so many more, who all passionately weighed in about the various facets of the music industry.

All in all, it was another great trip to New York, from all of the daytime action to the nighttime parties at the Tribeca Grand, with Ming+FS and others, and Webster Hall, with Chuck D, Johnny Juice and Brand Nubian.
