A BIRD'S-EYE VIEW

Jan 1, 2007 12:00 PM, Kylee Swenson Remix Editor

I have no psychic abilities. My mom claims to, but anything I could call psychic on my part is probably coincidence. Had I been psychic, I would have already made my millions as a receptionist for Yahoo! in 1995. (I graduated from college that summer just 10 minutes away from the company's then brand-new corporate offices — dumb, dumb girl.)

Despite the Remix editors' general lack of the sixth sense, we walked outside of our offices here in Emeryville, Calif. (right next to Oakland) and put our ears to the street in the hopes of picking up some information about the cutting-edge people, places and things coming down the pipeline for the year 2007. Tragically, on the way back in, one of the editors was hit by a FedEx truck and…. All right, the truth is, we never left our desks — I just thought I'd make it sound like it was harder than it was.

At any rate, we're happy to present to you our second-annual look at all things for the near future: “Go Forward, Move Ahead: 32 Sure Things for 2007.” We were excited about a lot, which meant we couldn't stop ourselves at just, say, 30, but of course we didn't have the space for everything we wanted to include. Therefore, you'll find even more of these forward-looking pieces on our newly launched site, remixmag.com. And as it turns out, there's a lot of other stuff coming this year, but rather than trying to squeeze it all in this issue or on the Web, we'll just keep up the mindset for the whole year with more trendsetters, sweet new gadgets and gear, hot new producers and more.

Being our opening issue for the New Year, we also thought it pertinent to look back as well as into the future. Accompanying our special “Go Forward, Move Ahead” section in this issue is our fifth-annual Remix Technology Awards. This year, we have 28 winners in 26 categories (two ties just couldn't be broken), including best DAW, scratch DJ mixer, microphone and more.

Of course, not everyone is going to agree with our choices for the best products of 2006 and things to look out for in 2007, so feel free to write in and tell us where you think we went wrong. We're not afraid of a little constructive criticism. We might grumble, get defensive and talk smack about you behind your back (kidding again), but we'd like to hear what you have to say. Who should we interview this year? What studio or stage tips and tricks would you most like to learn about? What gear would you like us to review? What would you ask an entertainment attorney (for free) if you had the chance? We put out a magazine that we, as musicians, enjoy reading and also learn a lot from. But if there's something we haven't thought of or could do better, send us a message at remixeditorial@remixmag.com or through our MySpace page at www.myspace.com/remixmag. Happy New Year!
