Editor's Note: It's All About You
Jan 1, 2009 12:00 PM, By Lori Kennedy and Markkus Rovito
We thought about quoting Bob Dylan's “The Times They Are a-Changin'” to start off this Editors' Note, but then everyone in the world has already done that; plus, we don't even really like Dylan (before you consider beating us up for that, think about the 1,000,000 yuppie spawn running around the country named Dylan and reconsider). But alas, there are some massive “a-changes” happening all around us. It's no wonder everyone's walking around with a “WTF?” look. Our collective comfort zone has been shaken to the core.
When you've been doing something the same way for a long time, you tend to get in a rut. Sometimes you have to step out of those comfort zones to reexamine yourself, and that's when you realize that you actually need a change. And we've done just that at Remix. We've reexamined how we do things in order to best serve you.
We know you're online junkies. And because we're online junkies as well, we know that the most efficient way to deliver the latest gear and artist news and reviews is through our Website, which is why this will be our last monthly print issue. We're changing Remix into a Web-First venture, with four print issues a year to accompany each of our Remix Hotel events — Miami, San Francisco, New York City and Los Angeles. In the online-first format, we'll hit you with the mother lode of daily content, including artist features, gear reviews and video tutorials, up-to-the-minute industry news, audio clips, remix contests, interview videos and much more. We are, to say the least, supremely stoked about becoming a fully interactive, daily authority in music production. Over the coming months, you'll notice our site will be getting a major redesign with lots more rich media than ever before.
While we're excited about these changes and the opportunity to deliver more content, we've had to say goodbye to two of our dearest colleagues: Editor Kylee Swenson and Art Director Alex Butkus. Alex led the Remix design for many years; he's a talented, awesome guy with a great sense of humor. And Kylee? Well, there's not enough space here to describe her contribution and dedication to this magazine — it's enormous. She's one of the hardest working musicians we know with a deep, sincere love of all things music. She shaped the tone of Remix and gave it style. We know a lot of you made a connection with her via the Editor's Note page, and now we want to develop that connection into a full-on relationship with you online. The new Remixmag.com is going to be a music community. We musicians and enthusiasts love to exchange information and ideas. How many times have you said “OMG, you have to hear this new song!” or “This plug-in gave me a whole new sound”?
This is a lot of news to take in all at once. But know that what we're doing is the start of something really big for Remix and for you. We want to be your one-stop Web shop for all your music needs, to foster and develop a community at Remixmag.com. So once you've finished reading all about Common, what's gonna be big in 2009 and what we've deemed to be the best gear of 2008, put the issue down and pick up your mouse (or touch your trackpad, although that sounds kind of dirty). It's still Remix, no matter where you read it.
