anticon

Apr 1, 2003 12:00 PM

Style: Scream-hop, goth-hop, folk-hop, electronic-hop, space-hop, hip-rock

Established: In 1998, by artists sole and the pedestrian somewhere outside of Portland, Maine

Artists: alias, doseone, jel, odd nosdam, passage, the pedestrian, sole, why?

Essential Listening: sole, selling live water (2003); themselves, the no music (2002)

Manifesto (from the anticon Website): “Comprised of eight gentlemen involved both individually and in small groups with recording, performing, writing and unlearning art at large, anticon is a label for a movement. Bound by eight brands of genre defiance, the anticon family, along with a handful of co-worker cousins, has been amassing an archetypal work ethic for the past five years while allowing their respective aesthetics to grow separately and influence one another.”

A&R Philosophy: “We are all about unique musical personalities with some kind of homegrown aesthetic,” why? says. “We like pretty shit that bumps and dirty hi-fi shit and beefy lo-fi shit; we like mellow shit with balls. Basically, if you look good holding a guitar, we will put out your record.”

Upcoming: odd nosdam, no more wig for ohio (May); why?, oaklandazulasylum (June); and tours featuring why?, odd nosdam, themselves and sole
