Propellerhead Software Reason Tip 2: Make NNXT Patches Scream With Thor's Filters

Sep 16, 2009 12:19 PM, By Asher Fulero

I absolutely love the NNXT—it's a hugely powerful sampler with all the trimmings and dial-ability you could ask for.

One thing I love to do with some of the more traditional sounds (like pianos or strings) is to run them through the awesome-sounding analog filter banks on the new Thor synthesizer. This is so much fun in real life, and works just as well inside Reason.

Thor's Comb Filter and XXXX Filter are awesome, but not available separately, so this is the only way to gain access to them for other sounds.

Here's how to route audio from another device through the Thor:

Start by making sure you've got a solid MIDI controller input so you can play your NNXT patch.

Then load up an NNXT and a Thor synth. Here, I've loaded up the default patches for both—the Grand Piano and Epic Poly.

Press Tab to flip to the rear view of the rack.

Remove the NNXT's connection to the mixer and instead connect its audio output 1/2 to Thor's audio input 1/2.

Press Tab again to flip back to the front of the rack, and press Thor's 'Open Programmer' button to see its detailed view.

Find the modulation routing section at the bottom of the programmer area.

Choose Audio In 1 and Audio In 2 as Sources.

Then choose Filter 3 Input as Destinations for those two sources.

Don't forget to turn up the Amount, usually to 100.

Next, choose the Filter Type you'd like on Filter 3.

Now you're ready to go! Play the NNXT and tweak Thor's Filter 3 and hear your patches scream.
