New Gear: Waldorf Largo Soft Synth
Jun 15, 2009 6:27 PM
Venerable German synthmaker Waldorf has released its latest Largo software synthesizer ($299 US MSRP) to its dealers in Canada and the USA. Largo features Waldorf's virtual analog/wavetable synthesis engine and attempts to capture sounds from Waldorf's classic hardware synthesizers such as the Q, Wave, MicroWave series and the Pulse. (Scroll down to listen for yourself.)
With a GUI designed for intuitive tweaking, Largo capitalizes on modern computer power to provide a high voice count and access to a huge amount of parameters that lays bare the inner working of Waldorf synthesizers. Even with the gigantic number of sound design options, the workflow and parameter interaction mimics analog synthesis.
Largo patches can have up to four layers each, and each layer includes three oscillators/wavetables, three LFOs, two multi-mode filters, four envelopes and effects. Every parameter is independently programmable per layer, and most functions can be automated by a host DAW program.
The synth's GUI keeps the oscillator and filter sections visible at all times, with tabs for the deep modulation matrix, arpeggiator, effects, LFO and other sections (see images).
Largo runs on Mac and PC as a VST and/or AU plug-in.
