DIRECT SOUND EX-29 EXTREME ISOLATION
STUDIO HEADPHONES
Direct Sound, with its new EX-29 Extreme Isolation ($169) headphones, is looking to demonstrate that good headphones don't need to be the loudest. The Extreme Isolation headphones provide an incredible 29 dB of isolation from outside noise while boasting a comfortable design and resilient construction. The EX-29s are closed-back dynamic headphones with 40mm drivers. The frequency response stretches from 20 Hz to 20 kHz with a sensitivity rating of 96 dB. The phones operate at a low impedance of 32 ohms. The built-in connector is a 3.5mm miniphone, and a ¼-inch adaptor is included. The blessing for DJs, musicians and sound engineers is the long 3m cord. The anisotropic magnet drivers provide clear sound for monitoring mixes.

YAMAHA MAGICSTOMP
USB MULTI-EFFECTS FOR GUITAR
Designed for electric or acoustic/electric guitars, Yamaha's Magicstomp ($299) bridges the worlds of traditional stompboxes and modern studios. Thanks to its USB interface for Mac and PC, deep program editing, patch configuration and patch downloads from the Internet are all possibilities. Included are programs hailing from Yamaha's UD-, AG- and DG-series stompboxes, along with a number of digital effects from the SPX family. Magicstomp comes preloaded with 99 preset and 99 user programs, including vintage and new amp models, speaker modeling and microphone modeling, not to mention studio-grade effects, all using 24-bit processing. Drivers and patch-editor and tone-data files ship with the unit, and a dedicated Magicstomp Website (www.magicstomp.com) gives users the opportunity to freely upload and download new programs. The interface has been kept simple with a large bright LCD for editing, three multifunction parameter knobs, engage and disengage buttons and a volume control. Output is on balanced ¼-inch stereo jacks, and a 9V power supply and a USB cable are included.

PIONEER DVJ-X1
AUDIO/VIDEO TURNTABLE
The people at Pioneer always seem to be (pardon the pun) pioneering something, and now they have come up with the DVJ-X1 ($TBA), effectively leading the pack into the inevitable world of DVD DJing. With Pioneer's newest kid wonder, real-time DVD video manipulation is possible. For starters, you can cue up a track with the large (7-inch, 206mm) touch-sensitive jog dial that emulates the characteristics of a traditional turntable. You can also set a loop in real time, and once set, the loop can play continuously or until the ReLoop/Exit button is pressed, which allows the DVD to resume playing without a pause. Users can retrigger a loop at any time by hitting the ReLoop button again. Also present is an Emergency Loop function, which reads the track's bpm and automatically creates a four-beat loop for you. The DVJ-X1 can be played in either Vinyl or CDJ mode. In Vinyl mode, the jog dial functions just like a vinyl turntable: You can scratch or cue with it simply by spinning it in either direction. In the latter mode, the jog dial functions just like a Pioneer CDJ-series player, minus the touch sensitivity.
