ROGER NICHOLS DIGITAL DEMOS DETAILER AT AES

As a mixer and masterer, Roger Nichols has amassed a credit list that reads like a who's who of hitmakers from the past few decades. On hip-hop projects, he is occasionally credited as Uncle Remix. But as the head of the Roger Nichols Digital software company, he is putting out some inventive processing plug-ins, including the new Detailer. Roger and Co. demoed Detailer at AES 2006 in San Francisco, Oct. 6-8.
Detailer comes from a stereo mastering process developed by Nichols and used in many hit records. It increases the perception of detail in the mid level of a final mix while still allowing increased loudness. The process involves a combination of three-band limiting and dynamic widening using psychoacoustic processing. Detailer is designed to produce an effective result without a lot of adjustment.
Detailer splits the incoming signal into three frequency bands that are processed independently, but supposedly eliminate phase shifts at the crossover points, a common problem with multiband plug-ins. After signal processing, the three bands are recombined into a full-frequency signal. Detailer also maximizes audio levels (if that's needed) while preserving audio dynamics. A comprehensive set of meters lets you adjust Detailer settings to match the specific characteristics of your audio signals.
