CD REVIEW: SPOOKY, OPEN

Crispy and wispy
While woefully underappreciated in the states, England's Spooky made some of the more sonically beautiful electronic music of the '90s, on par with Orbital's best work. Although now on a decidedly more "accessible" vocal-filled kick, Spooky's Open still harnesses some of the ethereal magic of the duo's earlier material. Disc one showcases chill-to-danceable numbers with female vocals, such as the briskly soulful "No Return," while disc two issues trippier dub versions of most of the tracks, at times reminiscent of The Orb's Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld.
